The U.S. Department of State has introduced a new pilot program that allows certain B-1/B-2 visitor visa applicants to pay an additional fee for a faster interview appointment. The program is available through December 31, 2026 and is currently offered at various U.S. embassies and consulates including those in Canada. This pilot program is greeted with enthusiasm by the many non-Canadians with valid residence status in Canada who have plans to travel to the U.S. which requires a visa being issued at the U.S. embassy in Ottawa or one of the U.S. Consulates in Canada. The following are examples of some of the individuals who will benefit from this expedited appointment system:
- Canadians who want to travel to the U.S. with their non-Canadian nanny to care for the children.
- Older Canadians who want to travel to the U.S. with their Non-Canadian personal support worker/caregiver
- Foreign nationals residing in Canada on work permits who need to travel to the U.S. for business
- Foreign nationals residing in Canada who want to travel to the U.S. for pleasure or other personal reasons
Under the program, eligible applicants may pay a US $750 expedited appointment fee, in addition to the standard US $185 visa application fee, to secure a visa interview within 10 business days, subject to availability.
For individuals with upcoming business or tourist travel who do not qualify for a traditional emergency appointment, this new option may provide a practical way to obtain an earlier interview at a U.S. visa post in Canada.
