The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (“IRCC”) announced today that they will be sending invitations to apply (“ITA”) for the Parents and Grandparents program (“PGP”” between September 23, 2021 and October 7, 2021. These 30,000 invitations will be sent to those who are selected from the potential pool of sponsors that submitted their interest last year. As such, those potential sponsors who submitted their interest to sponsor either their parent or grandparent in the fall of 2020 are encouraged to monitor their emails for an ITA.
If you are among the 30,000 to receive one of the ITAs to sponsor your parent or grandparent, you will have 60 days from the date of the invitation to submit your application. The applications are to be submitted via the IRCC’s Permanent Residence Portal. All applicants must meet the eligibility criteria, which includes being a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or First Nations, who is at least 18 years old and can meet the minimum necessary income requirement. Quebec has additional income requirements that must be met. Additionally, as part of the application, sponsors need to undertake to financially support their parent or grandparent for 20 years (or 10 years if in Quebec), being required to repay any social assistance claimed by the sponsored.
If the application is successful, sponsored parents and grandparents will receive Canadian permanent residency, along with all associated benefits of that status.
