One of the last steps in officially becoming a Canadian citizen is the citizenship ceremony, indicating the end to a long journey for many. To support such individuals, the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) launched the #CelebrateCitizenship Challenge, encouraging small, medium, and large businesses to provide paid time off for employees attending their citizenship ceremonies. Why may this be important? In our current social climate, it is important that we make clear to our fellow Canadians that they belong and that they are valued. In supporting employees’ transitions to calling our multi-cultural country their home, we create environments based on inclusion and diversity which translates towards more positive workplace atmospheres and a more inclusive Canada.
