On March 12, 2020, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada released vital information on the Government of Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan for 2020-2022. The Levels Plan determines how many permanent residents will be admitted to Canada for the upcoming calendar years. The IRCC sets its targets and ranges for the total number of PR’s for each immigration category.

They have announced that Canada will welcome a total of 341,000 new permanent residents in the year of 2020, and this number will continue to increase to 351,000 and 361,000 in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

As illustrated by the chart below, IRCC breaks down the admission numbers for economic, family, refugee and protected persons, and humanitarian and other immigration categories. The economic category will be the largest influx of newcomers, with a total target of 195,800 permanent residents for 2020. The second largest category is the family class, with a total of 91,000 permanent residents coming under this class this year. IRCC plans for a total of 49,7000 refugees and protected persons to receive permanent residence status in 2020, while the humanitarian and other category will account for 4,500 permanent residents for the year.

Overall, we see the Government of Canada continue to action on increasing the flow of immigration to the country.
