The UK is scheduled to withdraw from the European Union on January 31, 2020. As the EU and the UK negotiate their future relationship, there is a transition period until the end of 2020 where the UK will continue to follow all of the EU’s rules and its trading relationship will remain the same. However, the UK will no longer be a member of the EU and will not have a say in policy.
In this transition period, the CETA agreement remains status quo between Canada and the UK. This means that UK citizens can still utilize the CETA provisions for business entry and professionals. UK citizens in Canada with current CETA work permits remain authorized to work until the expiration of their work permit. If they need to extend the CETA work permit, it may no longer be possible to utilize the CETA agreement.
